Metonymy

Metonymy is a figure of speech used in rhetoric in which a thing or concept is not called by its own name, but by the name of something intimately associated with that thing or concept. For instance, "Washington", as the capital of the United States, can be used as a metonym for its government.

    Surah Al Masad

For a better understanding of the Surah: 1 The real name of this uncle of the Prophet was Abd al-Uzza. He was popularly nicknamed Abu Lahab (lit., "He of the Flame") on account of his beauty, which was most notably expressed in his glowing countenance (Baghawi, on the authority of Muqatil; Zamakhshari and Razi passsim in their comments on the above verse; Fath al-Bari VIII, 599), Since this nickname, or kunyah appears to have been applied to him even before the advent of Islam, there is no reason to suppose that it had a pejorative significance. - The expression "hands" in the above clause is, in accordance with classical Arabic usage, a metonym for "power", alluding to the great influence which Abu Lahab wielded. 2 The expression nar dhat lahab is a subtle play upon the meaning of the nickname Abu Lahab. 3 Lit., "carrier of firewood", a well-known idiomatic expression denoting one who surreptitiously carries evil tales and slander from one person to another "so as to kindle the flames of hatred between them" (Zamakhshari; see also Ikrimah, Mujahid and Qatadah, as quoted by Tabari). The woman's name was Arwa umm Jamil bint Harb ibn Umayyah; she was a sister of Abu Sufyan and, hence, a paternal aunt of Muawiyah, the founder of the Umayyad dynasty. Her hatred of Muhammad and his followers was so intense that she would often, under the cover of darkness, scatter thorns before the Prophet's house with a view to causing him hurt; and she employed her great eloquence in ...

    Croatia National Anthem English lyrics

"Lijepa nasa domovino" ("Our Beautiful Homeland") is the national anthem of Croatia. Its opening words, "Lijepa nasa" ("Our Beautiful"), are widely used as a metonym for Croatia. The original lyrics were written by Antun Mihanovic and first published under the title "Horvatska domovina" ("Croatian homeland") in 1835. The music was composed by Josip Runjanin in 1846. The complete song was reportedly scored and harmonized by Vatroslav Lichtenegger in 1861, and it was first performed as the Croatian anthem in the same year, under the title "Lijepa naša". The original anthem has 15 verses. Since then it has come to be known under the slightly longer present title and a few minor adjustments have been made to the lyrics.Between 1918 and 1941, segments of the Croatian national anthem were part of the National Anthem of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Haha, couldn't think of a title, oh well. Metonym has a MySpace now: www.myspace.com Go there, hear a new song, friend us, whatever. All of our online downloads for music will be handled through that site as well, so those of you that can't buy a CD, don't worry. :P Also, friend my buddy Adam Hill. We have a link to his page through our MySpace. --- Right now, I'm very busy recording with a bunch of people, including a really cool guy from Berlin. We're producing a cover of In Flames' "I Am The Highway", and it's sounding amazing. He's a phenomenal guitarist. However, to record this song, I had to learn to sing just like Anders, which meant a ton of practice and learning to sing and scream together simultaneously. I give a brief, half-assed demo of what I'm doing. Enjoy! More to come soon! :)
